TATUNG
Tatung is a phenomena. Tatung in hakka language means people who was possessed by the spirit of the ancestors. The spirits use the tatung ritual performers as a mediator between the spirits world and the human world.
The spirits of the gods and ancestors were summoned for something important. Usually, the spirits were summoned to heal or to give advice that was necessary. Most of the gods spirit were summoned for action that was related to taoism, such as exorcism, traditional treatment, and many other thing
There are only two places in the world that have tatung. They are West Kalimantan and Kepulauan Riau. The taung ritual is performed in the singkawang city, where tatung is very famous and have a lot of enthusiasts. Tatung is also found in Bangka Belitung, Kepulauan Riau, but the performers and enthusiasts aren't as much as compared in the West Kalimantan.
The tatung ritual was believed already exist in Tionghoa, China and then when the Tionghoa society migrated to indonesia, especially West Kalimantan, the original ritual was acculturated with the local culture and became tatung as we know today.
The tatung performer using anything that have sharp edges and pointy tip, or they usually try to slice theirselves using mandau, swords, knives, spears, and many else. But no matter they try to stab, slice, cut theirselves, nothing happened. The performers believed that the ancestors spirits who gave them the power to do that.
